Evolving Communities

This workshop will help dissolve the division between theoretical and empirical biology. We hope to establish solutions on the issues that prevent fruitful collaboration between these sides. The workshop will aim to collect enough discussion and ideas that we can summarize them in a colloquium/synthesis article.

Populations and species do not evolve in isolation but in highly dynamic environments with multiple interactions. Consequently, populations face multiple selection forces simultaneously, challenging our ability to gain a mechanistic understanding and predict future changes. This possesses a challenge for both empiricists and theoreticians, but work has so far mainly done in separation. The workshop aims to develop further concepts for studying evolving communities, with the main focus on increasing the dialogue and discussion between theory and experiments. Therefore, we will bring together experts from several different fields and provide space/time to discuss how to establish a better communication line and discuss the issues that prevents more fruitful collaboration between theory and experiments.

Deadline for registration and abstract submission is January 31 2016.

Costs: 180 Euros  (including all meals, events)

Please note that not all participants will be able to present their work, as we reserve most of the time for an active discussion.

Selecting Participants: One of the main aims of the workshop is to find ways to improve communication between theoreticians and experimentalists and we will try to balance the participants in that respect. Other than that, it will be first-come-first-served when we have the feeling that research interest/talk fits to the topic of evolving communities.

Travelling awards: There is limited funding available to support travelling. Please contact brite@evolbio.mpg.de for more information.
