Importance of social distancing

On the right you can find a project focused on explaining social distancing in the time of pandemic. The project is suitable for high-school students and can be carried out independently at home. It can be particularly useful for high-school teachers teaching their students remotely during the coronavirus crises.

The project was developed by Kristína Hudáková from C. S. Lewis Bilingual High school, Bratislava, Silvia De Monte and Florence Bansept from Max Planck Institute, Plön, Germany, and Barbora Trubenová from IST Austria.
You can find more information information on topics of evolutionary biology here with a special page on pandemics here.

To simulate many more scenarios similar to those described in the project, you can use online simulator here (courtesy of Peter Glaus).

When a new virus appears, we, humans, don't have antibodies against it. If the virus spreads quickly, many people can get sick at the same time, overwhelming the health care system. To avoid that, it is necessary to implement social distancing - people avoiding unnecessary social contact, slowing down the spread of the virus.

Below, you can simulate many scenarios with different measures implemented. You can allow people to meet freely, or ban large gatherings, or even small groups.

For each simulation trial, you can set how many groups of different sizes are allowed to form. Try to test many different scenarios, and repeat simulations multiple times for the same scenario (parameter test). What do you observe?
