John F. Baines
Prof. Dr. John Baines has served as a professor of Evolutionary Genomics at Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel since April 2009, and since 2016 is the leader of the newly founded Section of Evolutionary Medicine. He has a dual appointment in the Medical Faculty of CAU (Institute for Experimental Medicine) and in the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in nearby Plön. His working group operates laboratories at both the University Clinic Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), Campus Kiel and in Plön. In 2016, the CAU Medical Faculty and UKSH founded the Section of Evolutionary Medicine on the Kiel Campus of the UKSH, with the mission to further strengthen the link between evolutionary biology and biomedical research.

The Research
Evolutionary Genomics |
Topics in the Baines research group focus on the genetic basis of interactions between mammalian hosts and their commensal microbiota and the evolution of disease, particularly in relation to chronic inflammatory disorders. The lab is a participating member of the International Max Planck Research School for Evolutionary Biology in cooperation with the University of Kiel.

Independent BMBF Group in Infection Research |
The Unterweger research group studies how bacteria interact with each other in communities and why bacterial evolution matters when humans get sick. We are particularly interested in the type VI secretion system, a molecular mechanism with which bacteria kill each other.
|
Group Intestinal Microbiology |
The Poyet research group develops cutting-edge methodologies to deeply investigate the human gut microbiome genomic and functional diversity associated with health and disease
